The Wonders Of Chess! By Chloe.
Chess is a awesome game! People believe it was first originated in India where it was called Chaturanga, it appears to have been invented in the 6th century. Many people all over the world love chess. Even though the UK don’t see chess as a sport, over 100 countries and the International Olympic Committee recognize chess as a competitive sport.
In chess there is many different pieces, and those many different pieces have different moves to play. For instance; the pawn’s move is straight, and the pawn can only attack on an angle (They are the 8 pieces in the front). For the rooks (they are the little castles on the sides) they can move horizontally or vertically. For the bishops (they are the big towers) they start by the King and Queen, they can move any number of squares in a diagonal direction, however they can not jump over any other pieces. For the knights (they are the horses) their moves are in a L shape, forwards and backwards. For The King and Queen (The two tallest pieces in the game), the queen can move any amount of squares and the King can move only one square in any direction.
At the beginning of the game the chessboard is laid out so that each player has the white (or light) color square in the bottom right hand side. The chess pieces are then arranged the same way in each row. The second row (or rank) is filled with pawns. The rooks go in the corners, then the knights next to them, then the bishops, and finally the queen, who always goes on her own matching color (white queen on white, black queen on black), and the king on the remaining square.
Now you are ready to play your own game of chess, whether it’s competitively or just for fun just make sure to know about the moves and pieces.
